Cold sores are often caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. Most commonly they are found around the mouth near the lips or nose.

Treatment of Cold Sores
Cold sores can often be treated with an anti-viral medication-sometimes a simple topical medication is good enough and other times you may need to take pills.
